We think it's most appropriate for 1st - 3rd grade students. But many teachers have adapted the materials to use for younger or older grades.
If you want to use for younger grades, you'll need to add more support and likely do the routine as a whole class. We offer guidance on this in the resource.

With the Chunk Spelling Method, you and your class will make one collaborative list of words for the weekly word family. That list will include CVC words, CCVC words, and "big" words. For example, cat, that, and caterpillar for the -at word family.
You can differentiate by letting students choose their own words, since many will naturally gravitate to the exact difficulty of words they need to work on.
You can also encourage students to choose more words in certain columns to guide their practice to the appropriate level for their needs.
