We think it's most appropriate for 1st - 4th grade students. But many teachers have adapted the materials to use for younger or older grades.
If you want to use for younger grades, you'll need to add more support and likely do the routine as a whole class. We offer guidance on this in the resource.
If you want to do this for older students, you'll want to focus on the "big" words they can create with each word family. For example: words like catastrophe for the -at word family. We include a long list of "big" words for each word family.
We've got 2 easy options for you!
• Option 1 Web-Based Videos (Most Popular): All you need to use this resource is internet connection and access to our website secondstorywindow.net and vimeo.com to play the included videos!
• Option 2 Powerpoint Presentations: If you have access to PowerPoint, you can use the included slideshows for the lessons. But please note that the files are large and some school computers have trouble with the complicated animations.

You can start at any point during the year. The lessons do grow in difficulty throughout the year but it doesn't matter too much if you go in order, skip some weeks, or rearrange the order. This is a very flexible routine!
You can use these lessons any way you like! We usually pick 1 or 2 weeks a month to switch things up and do a week of seasonal lessons instead of the regular lessons.
But some poeple add the seasonal lessons in as extra practice or don't use the seasonal lessons at all. There is no right or wrong way to do this!
