Here's how The Chunk Spelling System works:
STEP ONE: Choose a word chunk and start building words with the soundboard.
(FYI: With the Chunk Spelling System, you'll get materials for 86 word families!)
Each week, students will start with a hands-on, interactive exploration of a word family or "chunk"! They'll use a soundboard to see how many words they can create for this week's chosen word family chunk.
STEP TWO: As a class, brainstorm "big" words that contain the chunk.
(Example: the word "caterpillar" for the word chunk "-at.")
The class will make a master list of words, including beginning consonants, beginning blends and digraphs, and the "big" words they discovered for the word family.
STEP THREE: Time to discuss!
This is where the magic happens! 🤩
As the class shares their words for the group chart, some misconceptions may arise and you may discover some words that kids don't know the meaning of. This is where you can help clear up misconceptions and do some on-the-fly vocabulary instruction.
STEP FOUR: Use the vocabulary picture cards as needed to introduce new words.
When brainstorming words, students are bound to generate some words they’ve heard of, but don’t really know the meaning of. Vocabulary picture cards help students make stronger associations between words and their meanings.
STEP FIVE: Choose this week's spelling words.
Students get the opportunity to choose their own set of words from the full list. It's much more powerful for students when they get to exercise choice about what words they want to study.
This step is flexible and can be formatted however works best for your class.
STEP SIX: Practice, practice, practice!
Students can use the tri-fold activity menu to practice the words in class or as homework.
There are a variety of engaging and multi-sensory activities to choose from each week. Your students will love the shape write and look, say, cover, write! Each menu is different so students have tons of options!
STEP SEVEN: Assess & watch your students progress.
At the end of the week, it's time to do a quick assessment. You can either give the class the same spelling test or have students do partner tests to assess each other on their individual lists.

We think it's most appropriate for 1st - 3rd grade students. But many teachers have adapted the materials to use for younger or older grades.
